The year was 1991. Hulk Hogan (Terry Bullea) and the Ultimate Warrior were about to headline WrestleMania VII, the Legion of Doom were kicking the Orient Express’ ass in arenas all over the country and Curt Hennig was being chased by Kerry Von Erich for the Intercontinental title. It seemed like the WWF machine was firing on all cylinders. Then somebody had the bright idea to bring the out of shape Buddy Rose into the fed’ and make him the spokesperson for personal fitness.
It what appeared to be an apparent reference to the weight loss associated with cocaine use, the fake “Blow Away Diet” was marketed on Saturday mornings to children across the nation.
“Nobody’s ever seen a diet like that used by Playboy Buddy Rose,” said the WWF. “He is a slim, trim 217 pounds. It is the Blow Away diet plan.”
If that wasn’t bad enough, the commercials featured a 300+ pound, middle aged man wearing nothing but powder.
